How Pilates May Help People with Osteoarthritis

May 8, 2012

People with osteoarthritis pain may find Pilates helful, medical expert says. Osteoarthritis is a disease that is prone to hip replacement such as DePuy which has faced several complaints for being defective and has become the subject of many lawsuits for which first DePuy hip recall trials is being scheduled.

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that usually affects the cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

Pilates, which is named after its creator Joseph Pilates, is a work-out system that focuses on the basic postural muscles that maintains the body balanced and the spine in healthy alignment. Pilates was first developed in the early 1900s to improve Joseph Pilate's health and that of fellow World War I prisoners of war. In the 1980s, Pilate reclaimed popularity among anyone interested in its health benefits. Pilates can be learned through using special Pilate’s equipment in different settings such as private or semi-private. There are also group mat classes (performed on mats) that do not use equipment.

In essence, there are three pieces of equipment used with Pilates: The Reformer, the Cadillac and the Chair. Mat exercises emphasize on strengthening the trunk muscles and hip muscles while increasing the elasticity of the spine and hips.

Pilates is a great form of work-out for people stricken with osteoarthritis, who shy away from exercise, which they feel they cannot do. Pilates is gentle. It does not put pressure your joints or add load to ligaments and cartilage that surround the joints. Instead, Pilates is created on principles such as mental focus is used to perfect movements and muscle control, awareness of proper spine position is vital while exercising, development of deep muscles of the back and abdomen supports proper posture, breathing techniques are used to promote mental focusing and centering and lengthening, strengthening and flexibility increases in the muscles.

Pilates may offer several health benefits association with osteoarthritis, such as lengthening a person’s body through Pilates movements might help get rid of the soreness. Stretching is considered to support with blood flow and the distribution of nutrients to muscles and tendons. Better circulation may also help to get rid of aches and stiffness. Subtle improvements in posture may result in fewer aches and pains, too.

All Pilate’s exercises start in a patient’s basic body parts such as the abdomen. The patient is being advised to stay in his core and end in their core. However, before trying pilates exercises, a person must learn how to move from their core, and only then they will find out how to be able to realize the full benefit of Pilates.

Furthermore, due to patients experiencing a chronic medical condition, it is important for the patient to check with their doctor who which has no objection with the person’s beginning a Pilates program. Most likely, the patient’s doctor will reassure the participation rather than discourage it to avoid the severity of the ailment which may pose a higher risk and may lead to surgical procedure that is the subject of several hip replacement recall.
